The Black Country Skills Factory launched a Career Map to young people at the University of Wolverhampton’s ‘Manufacture a Career in Engineering’ event last month.

The event which took place on Friday 31st January 2014 was aimed at inspiring young people to consider careers in manufacturing and engineering, and was a partnership event organised between Wolverhampton City Council, the University of Wolverhampton and the City of Wolverhampton College.

Young people from schools in years 9-11, College & Sixth Form students from years 12 & 13 and University undergraduates, recent graduates & postgraduate students were introduced to the Career Map in the form of a poster with the strapline ‘Same Career, Different Path’. The poster was extremely popular as it highlighted the different career pathways into the sector to young people - i.e. academic, vocational or apprenticeship.

A prototype of a Career Wheel with job roles, potential salaries and further career path information was also showcased at the event. Young people can sign up to receive their copy of the Career Wheel, once finalised, via the Skills Factory website at: www.blackcountryskillsfactory.co.uk/contact-us

Both the Career Map and Wheel were produced by DesignBP Marketing Communications based in Brierley Hill.

Some of the region’s leading employers from the engineering sector such as Jaguar Land Rover and UTC Aerospace Systems to name but a few, also attended the careers event to showcase their opportunities and help raise the aspirations of the young people of Wolverhampton.

The Black Country Skills Factory is an employer-led project supported by government funding whose aim is to address the skills shortages in the HVM sector in the Black Country, the only scheme of this kind across the UK to focus specifically on the HVM sector.
