The Black Country Skills Factory launched a Career ‘Wheel’ to students at a careers fair organised by the Black Country University Technical College (UTC) earlier this week.

The fair which took place on Tuesday 18th March 2014 was aimed at inspiring young people to consider careers in engineering and manufacturing.

Students from Black Country UTC who are considering moving onto an Apprenticeship or University were introduced to the Career Wheel with the strapline ‘Same Career, Different Path’. The Wheel highlights the pros and cons of different career pathways into the high value manufacturing (HVM) sector including: academic, vocational and apprenticeships.

The Wheel also features job roles, potential salaries and further career path information. Young people can sign up to receive their copy of the Career Wheel via the new ‘Manufacture your Future’ microsite at: www.manufactureyourfuture.co.uk

The Career Wheel joins the Career Map (poster), launched in January 2014, to create a portfolio of materials developed by the Skills Factory as part of the schools strand of the project, aimed at changing the perception of the manufacturing sector amongst young people in the Black Country.

Both the Career Map and Wheel were produced by DesignBP Marketing Communications based in Brierley Hill. The company is also working in partnership with the Skills Factory to produce a Careers Information Pack and mobile application for young people and their parents to enable them to visualise the different career pathways within the HVM sector.

The Career Maps and Wheels will now be distributed at career fairs and schools in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton through the Skills Challenge programme delivered in partnership with Education Business Partnerships.

The Black Country Skills Factory is an employer-led project supported by government funding whose aim is to address the skills shortages in the HVM sector in the Black Country, the only scheme of this kind across the UK to focus specifically on the HVM sector.
